Metabolic Stress: Does your horse look like this? |

If your horse has a cresty neck and fat pads by the
tail head in relation body fat over to the rest of the body, this is a
significant sign of potential problems with insulin. Many of the horses I see who are chronic
laminitis cases have similar body types. It is very important to eliminate as
much sugar from the diet as possible and get the horse to lose weight. Prevention is a much easier road than
trying to care for a horse that has become laminitic. Some horses with this body type lose weight
easier on an equine magnesium supplement.
Horses like this often do not lose weight even when all concentrated
feeds are removed and must be put in a grazing muzzle part of the day to slow
their forage intake. |
